November and December 2022 have been extremely busy months at Terra Tangata. The Whangawehi Community opted for an official opening for the walkway on the 8th of December 2022. Two storms have severely damaged the track and the repair work has been long and challenging. After 2 months of hard work, the Whangawehi walkway was officially opened by Eva Coop and Pat O’Brien. We were privileged to have Minister Nash and Minister Whaitiri attending and supporting the event.
For the Whangawehi Committee and myself, the opening was the culmination of 10 years of hard work. During that time, we have raised funds, established 250 000 trees, retired over 150 ha of riparian margins and bush blocks and engaged with the local school. The work delivered is significant but is not finished !
The walkway offers everybody the opportunity to enjoy and connect with a restored catchment and contribute in one way or another. Well done Whangawehi team.
